In the 1970's, Russ Scala was working as a specialty-trained paramedic member of a SWAT team. As well, Russ also started his career as a competitive endurance athlete. It was during these years that Russ noticed two disturbing patterns of illness among the people he interacted with everyday. Thus, the Institute of Nutritional Medicine and Cardiovascular Research was formed and the E-JUVEN 8 program was developed and refined.
First, he became aware that some of his paramedic and SWAT team co-workers were developing and dying of heart disease while only in their late 30's. Second, he saw his endurance training partners being diagnosed with cancer, even when they had no family history of the disease.

After graduation, Russ put his close observations and intense study to work saving lives.
